Missile attack on Dnieper kills 40, German defense minister resigns

The death toll from Russia’s intense missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro rose to 40 on Monday.

City official Gennady Korban said at least 40 people were killed in the attack and 30 others were missing. And 75 people including 14 children were injured.

It was the deadliest attack in a three-month Russian campaign in cities across Ukraine.

Meanwhile, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht resigned on Monday after coming under fire for discussing the Ukraine war amid fireworks in a post on social media on New Year’s Eve.

The video prompted the CDU opposition party in parliament to call the defense minister ‘tone-deaf’ and demand his resignation.

The defense minister resigned amid pressure to supply Ukraine with German-made battle tanks.

Russia launched an intense missile attack across Ukraine on Saturday. Residents of the collapsed nine-story residential building in Dnipro went missing. Officials in Ukraine have expressed disappointment that they have ‘very little’ hope of being rescued alive.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said rescue operations in the city would continue as long as there was even a small chance of saving lives.
