Capturing Soledar would make it easier for Russia to attack the nearby city of Bakhmu. Russian forces would have a safe position within the city’s range from which to launch a shelling attack.
There are deep salt mines in the city of Soledar. Russia could use those mines to store military and military equipment. And this mine will also protect them from Ukrainian missiles.
The capture of the city of Bakhmut would then be a much-needed breakthrough for Russian forces in eastern Ukraine; said Edward Arnold, an officer of the Royal United Service Institute. However, he said, the city was of little strategic importance in the outcome of the war.
The city was destroyed after months of fierce fighting. While Russian forces have retreated elsewhere in Ukraine, Russia continues to attack Bakhmu.
