The other convicts are Advocate Nurul Islam’s brother Moinul Haque; He was sentenced to 10 years and fined Tk 10,000, in default of which he will have to serve another 6 months in prison.
Sabzul Islam and Moinul Haque were absconding at the time of the verdict.
According to the records of the case, Abdul Alim Khan was shot and killed in a land dispute between two parties in Tongar village of Kulanj Union of Sunamganj’s Dirai Upazila. The victim’s brother Ajmal Khan filed a murder case the next day as the plaintiff.
The investigating officer of the case, Subhash Chandra Saha, OC of Dirai police station, filed a charge sheet in the court on September 3, 2004, accusing 41 people. The court directed the CID to investigate the case when the accused filed a complaint against the charge sheet.
After the CID investigation, 41 people were accused and filed a supplementary charge sheet in the court on January 27, 2009. The plaintiff filed a writ in the High Court as the complaint was not framed despite repeated date changes. Pursuant to the writ, the case was transferred from Sunamganj to Sylhet District and Sessions Judge Court in 2012.
