Sri Lanka will repay the debt in March, the hope of the governor

Central Bank Governor Abdur Rauf Talukder is hopeful that Bangladesh will get back the 200 million dollars given as a loan in the difficult times of Sri Lanka by next March.

He told reporters that he got the assurance after a meeting with Sri Lanka’s Central Bank Governor P. Nandalal Birasingh.

Governor Rauf Talukder is currently in the United States to attend the annual general meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

This seven-day general meeting started last Tuesday at the head office of the World Bank. During the main formalities of the meeting, he had a meeting with the Governor of Sri Lanka.

In response to questions from Bangladeshi journalists in Washington on Thursday, Governor Rauf Talukder said, “We gave 200 million dollars to Sri Lanka in three installments for the swap arrangement. But due to Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, the money could not be returned on time.”

At the request of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh has extended the time twice, the governor said, “Sri Lanka is supposed to return it in three installments in February and March 2023.”
