PSG could not beat Benfica this time

Despite dominating possession, PSG’s attack was lackluster. The team survived in the 19th minute. Ashraf Hakimi jumped a little to receive the cross from the right. According to VAR, there was no penalty because an opponent player was offside before Hakimi’s handball.

Two minutes later, Nicolas Otamendi was shown a yellow card for a bad tackle on Mbappe after taking the ball from the right. Neymar could not open the deadlock of the match with a free kick taken from a little above the box; This Brazilian forward hit the defense wall directly.

In the 38th minute, Marco Verratti was fouled by Antonio Silva in the box when Juan Bernat took control of his pass. The referee blows the penalty whistle. Mbappe gave PSG the lead from the spot kick. Christophe Gaultier’s side’s chances of reaching the last sixteen also loom.

This is Mbappe’s fourth goal in the Champions League this season. In this competition, he was at the top with Edinson Cavani on the record page of PSG’s top scorer with 30 goals. Mbappe took that record as his own.

Even in the second half, PSG’s game did not change. In the sixth minute, Hakimi’s cross was brought down by the chest and Mbappe took a shot with some space. The ball takes a turn and goes wide of the far post.

Joao Mario’s successful spot kick in the 62nd minute saw Benfica equalize. When Verratti fouled Rafa just inside the box, the referee decided to award a penalty after seeing the VAR.

At the end, after a corner, Mbappe’s volley at the far post was empty, but the ball was not scored due to offside. PSG remained winless in three consecutive matches in all competitions. Even Mbappe couldn’t smile the winner in a great summit match.

In this draw, both the teams have reached the last sixteen. PSG is at the top of the goal difference with 8 points, Benfica is in second place.
